President Donald Trump: The World Health Organization is a “puppet of China.” Sends letter to WHO with ultimatum.

May 19, 2020

On the same day that US President Donald Trump called the World Health Organization (WHO) a “puppet of China,” during his White House meeting on Monday, he later tweets a screenshot of a letter that he had sent to the Tedros Adhanom, the Director-General of the UN backed health organization.

President Trump’s letter, addressed to Tedros directly, begins by explaining that the reason why his administration suspended its funding of the organization is due to their “failed response to the COVID-19 outbreak.”

The letter states that the organization shows a “an alarming lack of independence” from China, and effectively outlines a 30-day deadline for the WHO to commit to “substantive improvements” or risk losing millions in funding, or a full pull-out altogether.

“If the WHO does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the WHO permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization,” Trump wrote to Tedros in the letter.

During the White House meeting on Monday, Trump also said, “I think [WHO] have done a very sad job. The United States pays them US $450 million a year. China pays them US $38 million a year.”

Trump has been a very vocal critic of the WHO for their failure to properly handle the coronavirus outbreak and for not hold Beijing accountable.

With a presidential election only months away, Trump is regularly attacked and blamed for the coronavirus by mainstream media and left-wing politicians.
