Robert Trump, young brother of U.S. President Donald Trump, passed away Saturday night after being admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. He was 71.
“It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight. He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace,” the President announced in a statement.
The cause of death has not been released to the public as of the time of this writing.
On Friday, ABC News reported that Robert Trump was hospitalized in June for more than a week in the intensive care unit at Mount Sinai hospital in New York.
He was described as being “very ill,” and the President acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.
“I have a wonderful brother. We’ve had a great relationship for a long time, from day one,” he told reporters. “And he’s in the hospital right now, and hopefully he’ll be alright, but he is pretty – he’s having a bad time.”
The president put his plans aside so he could visit his brother at the hospital on Friday.
Robert, who was the youngest of the Trump siblings, worked as a top executive at the Trump Organization.
President Trump once described his younger brother as “much quieter and easygoing than I am,” and “the only guy in my life whom I ever call ‘honey.”‘
In June, Robert Trump filed a temporary restraining order in hopes of blocking the publication of an unfavorable tell-all book by his niece, Mary Trump, who is the daughter of Fred Trump Jr.
Throughout President Trump’s presidency, Robert Trump has maintained his support for his brother.
President Trump’s other siblings include:
Maryanne Trump Barry. His older sister who retired as a federal judge in 2019.
Fred Trump Jr. His older brother who died in 1981 at the age of 43 from complications with alcoholism.
Elizabeth Trump Grau. His older sister who retired after many years as a business executive.
According to reports, the President is expected to attend his brother’s funeral, though details are not available at this time.
Prior to his brother’s death, the President had upcoming travel plans to visit four battleground states for his re-election campaign.
